Jimena Murillo Chávarro graduated as a lawyer from the Externado University of Colombia, in 2005. During her studies, she worked as a teacher’s assistant for the Department of Labour law.
Before doing her Master in Belgium, she worked in Piza & Caballeros Consultores Ldt, and in the Tribunal Superior de Cundinamarca in Colombia. In these instances she gained practical experience in diverse issues of Tax and labour law. Then she moved to London, for a period of two years. In the UK she improved her skills of legal English following a course on “the language of legal methods” at Birkbeck, University of London. There she also revised UK insolvency law, working as a bankruptcy examiner in the Insolvency Service in Bournemouth.
In 2008 she obtained with cum laude her degree of advanced Master of European and International Energy and Environmental law, at the Catholic University of Leuven. She wrote a thesis titled The Legal Challenge of Linking Biofuels and Agricultural Policy, in which she also studied the biodiversity risk related to Biofuels productions on a large scale. As part of her master programs she did an internship at ENHESA. Then she worked as an intern in the Regulatory Department of Hunton & Williams where she was mentored by Prof. Lucas Bergkamp. She dealt with topics about REACH, the WEEE and RoHS Directives, and pesticides.
Since October 2009, Jimena was conducting a Ph.D. research at the Department of Public International Law, under the supervision of Prof. Dr, Frank Maes (supervisor) and Prof Dr. An Cliquet (co-supervisor). Jimena defended her PhD on June 11, 2014 with the title "The human right to water: a legal comparative perspective at the international, regional and domestic level".
